It's (finally) the end of the semester, and four of our fantastic exec members from 2016-2017 are (unfortunately) leaving to pursue bigger and better things. Here's a final check-in with them about Redhawk Radio, their experiences, and some revealing personal questions!

Joe Hayden, General Manger

How did you get involved with Redhawk Radio?

Ha. Funny story. I passed by Redhawk Radio at Mega Fair and put my name down on the sheet basically because I love music, and radio seemed cool. This was just one of 85 different orgs I signed up for because I wanted to do everything as a wee and naive lil fre$hman. When I went to the first meeting, a friend from my first-year orientation group, Evan Burnham, was there. He was like, “Yo, do you wanna host a radio show with me?” And I was like, “Yeah dude, that sounds cool.” And the rest is history…

What does Redhawk Radio mean to you?

Coming to Miami and knowing essentially no one, I was really looking for any and every way to get plugged in. Redhawk Radio basically fell into my lap, and I was always looking for ways to increase my involvement. From being a first-year show host, to assisting the non-existent chief engineer at the time, to becoming the sound engineer and eventually the general manager, I really ran the gauntlet. I ran this gauntlet because I really felt strongly that WMSR* was a hidden treasure that was dwindling due to lack of presence on campus and needed some love. I took on responsibilities because someone needed to continue the great revitalization/transformation that the previous team, notably Lexi and Ryan, had begun with the re-branding.

Redhawk Radio has provided a place to learn, grow, and, of course, hone my radio voice. I’ve always had a passion for discovering new music, and this has given me a platform to do what I love. It’s become a community that is now very near and dear to my heart. So, Thnks Fr Th Mmrs, radio community. Much love.

*During our time here, there has been a transition and re-branding from WMSR - Redhawk Radio to the more colloquial Redhawk Radio, since our call letters were to designate our now out-of-service FM frequency on the radio.

What was your favorite thing about Redhawk Radio?

The people. The tunes. The experience. The good vibes.

Biggest musical influence?

Okay, this has to be answered depending on the time period in my life. As a kid, my sister got me hooked on Yellowcard when she bought the Ocean Avenue CD for me. So, naturally, I jammed around my house with my Walkman blaring the angsty, pop punk tunes. That was the first band I got into. As I developed my musical taste, Coldplay became a big influence later on for me. I’ve learned many of their songs on piano. Twenty One Pilots was just beginning their music career back in my high school years, and my buddy Taylor went to one of their early concerts. He introduced me to them and I immediately got hooked on them. It’s been cool to see them develop over the years from essentially no following to millions now.

Current favorite music?

I’d say it’s a toss up between rap/hip hop and electronic music. Kendrick and Kanye are always go-tos. Odesza and Illenium are killin' the game. Getting back into Josh Ritter recently...

What is your spirit animal and why?

Some type of monkey probably because I love swinging around and being mischievous.

Which Hogwarts House do you belong in and why?

Tbh, I took the Pottermore quiz several years ago and was sorted into Hufflepuff. I took it again recently and got Ravenclaw. I think I identify with Ravenclaw more because they value wit and intelligence.

Maddie LaPlante-Dube, Marketing & Promotions Director

How did you get involved with Redhawk Radio?

Okay, “How” is a weird question - like, I went up to the table at Mega Fair as a fresh-faced frosh and said, “Can I join?” But for real, I wanted to have a radio show before I even went to college, because I love music and I want everyone to love it too. So I’ve had a show since I was 18! Then, after a year abroad (I had a show at Trinity College Dublin, too), I called up our fearless leader Joe to see if there were any open positions on Exec, and lo-and-behold, the Programming and Marketing position needed someone to fill in. So it’s been a lot of “Can I do this? Can I do that?”

What does Redhawk Radio mean to you?

Redhawk Radio, to me, means a safe place to land, a group of people who are interested and passionate, and an opportunity to connect to places outside of campus. It also gives us a chance to be little warriors - to fight for recognition we deserve, to fight to find writers and hosts as interested as we are, and to fight to get music we know is quality out into the world.

What was your favorite thing about Redhawk Radio?

The people. The people, the people, the people. Especially Exec, who I feel proud to know and who make me laugh.

Biggest musical influence?

The Chainsmokers….haha just kidding. The 1975, but, like, before they sold out.

Current favorite music?

Lots of Dermot Kennedy, Midnight Faces, Day Wave, The Japanese House, and Phoenix (always).

What is your spirit animal and why?

A bear because mentally I’m always in hibernation.

Which Hogwarts House do you belong in and why?

Either Gryffindor or Slytherin because I like being a powerful woman and doing sneaky and adventurous things. (Plus, I took the Buzzfeed quiz to procrastinate and both were my top options.)

Claire Stemen, Senior Editor

How did you get involved with Redhawk Radio?

I heard from Allison that there was a radio station on campus that you could have a show at (which seemed scary at first, so I was hesitant) but we finally joined because we had each other. After a couple of years in New Music Committee and doing our show Good Ish, we walked up to Joe and said “you need a revamped website and a style guide—we can do that.”

What does Redhawk Radio mean to you?

Redhawk Radio is all the people I’ve grown to love. It was hard for me to find friends at Miami and I never felt judged or out of place at Redhawk Radio. Everyone is so happy and enthusiastic about what we do—we all just really, really love music. With that comes awesome passion and some of the nicest people I know.

What was your favorite thing about Redhawk Radio?

I loved that Redhawk Radio lets you do you. Want a political show? No problem. Want to do all classical songs? Cool. It’s a place for expression, ideas, and teamwork. It might sound lame, but that’s really how I feel about my time here.

Biggest musical influence?

Hands down, The Beatles are my biggest influence. I know it’s oh-so cliché, but during my formative years they got me through almost any situation (I dare you to find a situation, emotion, or concept that isn’t vaguely addressed by them) and I would tout their songs as a lifestyle. I even wrote about them in my college essay, without them I wouldn’t have the opportunities I did.

Current favorite music?

Right now, I’m really into Jens Lekman, which is Allison’s doing, but I also am feeling Sin Fang, who is an Icelandic artist that I’ve loved for half a decade by now. They’re that chill, quiet, yet experimental sound I want from the springtime. They’re also a little familiar, which is a nice sense of stability right before graduation.

What is your spirit animal and why?

My spirit animal is the fox because I am scrappy and clever! I am also kind of a sneak and a prankster, so I have that mischievousness of the fox.

Which Hogwarts House do you belong in and why?

Slytherin. Like Maddie, I am a powerful lady who likes her voice and, especially, using it.

Allison Beer, Designer & Website Manager

How did you get involved with Redhawk Radio?

I joined New Music Committee in the fall of my freshman year but wasn’t really involved much until spring of my sophomore year, when Claire and I started doing Good Ish together. In high school I always thought it would be so cool to have a radio show because I loved sharing music with my friends, and working with the radio station has been everything I hoped for in that respect. It’s been my only constant involvement here at Miami and I’m so happy I got to be a part of exec as a senior.

What does Redhawk Radio mean to you?

Redhawk Radio means awesome people having a ton of fun together while also building up the reputation of the station on campus and online.

What was your favorite thing about Redhawk Radio?

The people! Everybody is so chill and fun to be around. I love going to exec every week and laughing with them for an hour, and I love seeing other members at the general meetings because everyone is so different yet still so passionate.

Biggest musical influence?

The Strokes. Also Ra Ra Riot circa 2008; their first album is what really got me into music when I was 14.

Current favorite music?

This year, I’ve been really into Whitney, Peter Silberman, Car Seat Headrest, and American Football's self-titled. Recently, I have also been super into the new stuff from Mac DeMarco, Slowdive, and the National.

What is your spirit animal and why?

A deer. I can’t really explain why, but it fits.

Which Hogwarts House do you belong in and why?

Ravenclaw, because I can be a huge know-it-all sometimes. (Also, like Joe, Pottermore sorted me into Hufflepuff first but I know that sorting process is pretty random and I don't agree with that. I've been a Ravenclaw forever.)
