A Lesson From Celtic Woman, by Jonathan Mirau

A charismatic all-female Celtic music group, Celtic Woman consists of Megan Walsh, Chloe Agnew and fiddler Tara McNeil. Celtic Woman performs music from traditional Celtic tunes to covers of modern favorites. This ensemble of talented musicians from across Ireland was formed in 2004 by David Downes, former director of Riverdance. Celtic Woman’s original members consisted of Chloe Agnew, Orla Fallon, Lisa Kelly, Meav Ní Mhaolchatha, fiddler Mariead Nesbitt, and New Zealand singer Hayley Westenra. Throughout the years, many of the members have moved on to other projects. Megan Walsh is their newest member and Chloe Agnew has rejoined the group. “Once a Celtic Woman, always a Celtic Woman,” as the members all say.

I discovered them by chance. I was listening to Celtic music on YouTube and Celtic Woman was recommended, so I decided to check them out. After listening to their music, I’ve come to really enjoy their work, so I listen to them all the time.

One day I was scrolling through Instagram and I clicked on Megan’s story. She was offering singing lessons over Zoom, so I decided to take the opportunity. All I had to do was send her an email to arrange a lesson.

Megan has had many experiences with music throughout her life. She grew up in a musical family who cultivated her love for music. She later studied with The Royal Irish Academy of Music and went to college at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Later she performed with The Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland, along with various musical theatre productions. Now, she’s a Celtic Woman.

Our lesson was casual. We focused on breathing exercises and I would match the note of a piano (I chose Africa by Toto). Afterwards, we spoke on how we both like to music to music when stressed, and I got to know Megan on a more personal level, as well. She sings, plays guitar, and plays piano (I play bass guitar and drums) and we’ve both had jobs in the service industry.

It’s so hard to choose just one favorite song from Celtic Woman since I enjoy most of their music, but here are a few: Teir Abhaile Riu, Spanish Lady, The Sky and The Dawn and The Sun, Scarborough Fair, and Ancient Land.

Celtic Woman is a unique music group with a wide range of genres and a contagious energy, with fun shows for the whole family. Regardless of what your tastes are in music, you will definitely find something that you enjoy from Celtic Woman.
